NEO 2 is the simple and rugged note-taking device that has all of the features of a NEO (fully featured word processor, typing tutor, long battery life etc.) but also includes innovative wireless technology that allows wireless printing, wireless voting and assessment functionality, plus wireless file transfer to a Google Docs account.

  • Automatically saves all work
    All work is automatically saved as it is created. This means you never have to ’save’ your work, and your text is safe, even if you switch your it off.
    NEO 2 also has an internal battery, so even when the AA batteries reach the end of their life, your work is safe whilst the new batteries are installed.
  • Beam text transfer/share
    Every NEO 2 is equipped with an Infra-red (IR) transceiver, and this can be used not only to send text to computers and printers, but also between NEO 2s. This is particularly useful for when NEO 2s are being used for collaborative writing, or when users want to share ideas.
  • Character, word, paragraph and page count
    AlphaWordPlus for NEO 2 is a very powerful word-processor, and has the facility for you to count the number of characters, words, paragraphs and pages that you have written.
  • Choice of display font
    NEO 2’s screen can display up to 6 lines of the text. You can change the size of the display to make the text bigger, with choices from 6 lines right down to 2 lines, which is ideal for younger users, users with visual impairment, as well as dyslexic and dyspraxic users.
  • Compatibility
    NEO 2 is compatible with USB-enabled Macintosh (Mac OS 9 and higher) and Windows computers (Windows 98SE and higher, including Windows Vista), as well as many USB and IrDa-enabled printers. NEO 2 is equipped with Radio frequency chip for true two-way communication to support classroom response capabilities (”clickers”) and wireless printing to network computers. It operates in the public 2.4 GHz band, the frequency used by WiFi, Bluetooth, and other wireless devices.
    It uses standard IEEE 802.15.4 modulation and communication protocols to avoid interference with other devices operating in the same area.

    Because NEO 2 switches on instantly and opens automatically in a word-processing file, it is extremely fast and easy to use. Work is saved automatically, and there are no menus or potentially confusing procedures to follow.
    NEO 2 has no moving parts, other than the keyboard, and has been designed to withstand a drop of 1m. Hence it is more than able to survive even the most demanding classroom treatment.

  • Instant on/off
    NEO 2 switches on and off with a single key-press. When switched on, it instantly opens the last file that was being worked in, with the cursor ready in the last place it was being used. When switched off, it will shut down instantly, with all work saved. There is no need to allow precious time for the start-up and shutdown procedures required by computers and laptops.
  • Keyboard
    Scandinavian NEO 2 supports QWERTY DA, QUERTY NO and QWERTY FI layouts.
    NEO 2 can be used as an additional keyboard for any PC or Mac-compatible laptop or computer. This feature enables two or more users to work together with text on the same screen.
  • Linked files (sometimes known as ‘rubrics’)
    NEO 2 has the facility within AlphaSmart Manager (accompanying desktop management software) to create Linked Files (or rubrics) and send them to one or more NEO 2s. A linked file is a read-only file that is linked to a normal read/write file. The User can toggle quickly and easily between both, making it an ideal way to provide and use notes, instructions and lists.
  • Long Battery Life
    NEO 2 runs on 3 normal alkaline AA batteries, which should provide approximately over 700 hours of usage. This equates to about 1 year’s normal use. So you never need to carry extra adapters or have to worry about being near a mains socket.
  • Name file option
    If required, NEO 2’s files can be given names, for easy identification, such as topics, subjects or different users where the same NEO 2 is being shared by several users.
  • One key file select/change
    NEO 2 has eight files that can be selected from the keyboard with a single touch. If required, these files can also be given names, for easy identification, such as topics, subjects or different users where the same NEO 2 is being shared. Changing files is done by simply pressing the file-number on the keyboard relating to the file you want. In addition, you can create extra files over and above the 8 that are accessed directly from the keyboard.
  • One key text print
    Once you’ve created text on your NEO 2 it is easy to print it. Connect it to a PCL3 printer using a USB cable, and press Print. Your text will print out automatically. If your printer is infra-red enabled, follow the same procedure, but instead of connecting via USB, point the NEO 2 at the printer’s IR port and press Print on the NEO 2.
  • One key text send
    Once you’ve created text on your NEO 2 it is simple to send it to a PC or Mac. Open an application on the computer that accepts text, such as Word or Textease, connect it to a computer using a USB cable, and press Send. Your text will flow in automatically. If your computer or laptop is infra-red enabled, follow the same procedure, but instead of connecting via USB, point the NEO 2 at the computer’s IR port and press Send on the NEO 2 to transfer text.
  • Optional password protection
    Any NEO 2, or any individual file can be password protected, if required. There is also a master password which can be used to gain access for those difficult moments when a password has been forgotten!

  • Printer Compatibility
    Host based printers (this means that there are no drivers on the printer, the printer is completely controlled by the computer) are not compatible with NEO 2. NEO 2 is only compatible with most printers that have built in drivers usually running PCL3. NEO 2 will also print wirelessly to a computer’s default printer once a Renaissance Receiver has been connected and AlphaSmart Manager 2 has been installed.

    4 MB of software (SmartApplet) storage, and 512 KB of data storage to two hundred pages of single-spaced text.
  • Trolley option
    The SmartOption trolley can hold up to 30 NEO 2s for easy and safe storage, transport and management. When fitted with an AlphaHub, the trolley provides simple, safe and easy communication between a computer or laptop and any or all NEO 2s connected inside the trolley.
    Using the AlphaSmart trolley any or all files on any or all NEO 2s in the trolley can be uploaded onto a computer or laptop, using the trolley’s AlphaHub. Similarly, text, linked files and SmartApplets can be sent to any or all NEO 2s in the trolley. Features, such as the spell-checker, calculator and configuration settings, can be centrally managed.
  • Wireless Printing
    NEO 2’s built-in wireless connectivity can be used to allow it to print wirelessly. To use this function, AlphaSmart Manager 2 must be installed on a computer or laptop, and a Renaissance Receiver must be attached to the computer’s USB port. From this point, whenever the Print key on the NEO 2 is pressed, the selected file will be printed on whatever printer has been set to default on the computer. This can include network printers.
  • 3 year warranty
    Every NEO 2 is supplied with our manufacturer’s back-to-base warranty for three years from the date of purchase. Informal market research amongst our users would suggest that the useful life of a NEO 2 is much longer.
